An Eco-friendly T-Shirt Line That Actually Looks Good

Be th3 changeMany people who try to live an eco-friendly life struggle to find clothes that actually look good and are made from greener materials. Enter a young entrepreneur from the Bay Area of California named Jamila Smith who created a line of t-shirts called BE TH3 CHANGE. The t-shirts are made from 50 percent recycled cotton and 50 percent recycled soda bottles.

“I want people to realize that not all Eco-friendly clothing has to look like it’s made from a burlap sack! It also doesn’t have to read ‘Save the Whales,’ ‘Wildlife Fund,’ or any other blatant environmental related slogans,” said Smith. “There is nothing wrong with those types of tees, it’s just not something I want to wear on a daily. I think Streetwear can take a step in the right direction by making fashions that appeal to street culture, which are less taxing on the environment.”

Be th3 change2BE TH3 CHANGE combines eco-friendly materials with designs that people actually want to wear. As Smith puts it, “Streetwear brands on the market use unsustainable materials for their garments, and Eco-friendly brands don’t always offer styles that most people want to wear. So I decided to combine the two, make styles which are appealing to most people, yet are made in a sustainable way.”

Be th3 change3The name for the clothing line comes from one of Smith’s favorite quotes by Mahatma Gandhi, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Smith is funding the clothing line with a crowd-funding model via a Kickstarter campaign. In fact, Kickstarter is the only place that you can purchase the t-shirts. The first $10,000 raised will be “just enough money” for Smith to produce the six t-shirt designs in two colors, and two styles (for men and women), which means producing 12 t-shirts.

Be th3 change4The t-shirts are made 100 percent in the USA. That means they have a smaller ecological footprint because they will not be shipped from overseas. That also means that American manufacturers are being given more work.
