The groups also sent a letter to Governor Cuomo about the impacts of fracking on the environment. The letter noted that fracking releases greenhouse gases (GHG), including methane:
“Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, 33 times more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide over 100 years, and about 100 times more potent than carbon dioxide over 20 years,” the letter declared. “As such, even small amounts of gas leaked into the atmosphere make enormous contributions to global warming. Increasing evidence, including a study led by researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, indicates that methane emissions from HVHF and related operations have been significantly underestimated by both the gas industry and the Environmental Protection Agency.”
Force Change has a petition directed to Governor Cuomo. The petition states that fracking “has been linked to numerous environmental and health concerns, including groundwater contamination, earthquakes, and the release of high amounts of methane, which contributes to global warming.”
If you are opposed to fracking, sign the petition urging Governor Cuomo to uphold the ban in New York state.
